Saville had tossed and turned all night, thinking of what Lucy had said to her. As the small party broke apart, Lucy had pulled Saville aside and said, “You know, Saville, I don’t see an angry mob trying to keep you and Fi apart. You’re doing a fine job of that all on your own. I suggest you grow some tits, stop being an ass, and not let one more minute pass. We only get a finite amount of minutes on this earth, and trust me, they gallop along without your consent. Don’t waste the time you have left. Before you know it, you’ll be as old as me, and Fi will have moved on.” She had shrugged, then added, “Maybe with Chelsey, which from my perspective wouldn’t be that horrible for her or Chelsey.”

Glancing at her phone, Saville noted it was still early. She sighed as she flipped the covers off and made the trek to her bathroom for a quick shower. She might as well make a stop at the bakery for one of those stuffed croissants she used to bring for Fi. The childlike delight never seemed to get old. Fi would attack the croissant and moan in appreciation, as if this would be the last croissant on the planet, and Saville had saved it just for her.

Saville reached the worksite fifteen minutes before seven. It surprised her that Fi wasn’t there already. She carried the hot coffee, made precisely the way Fi liked it, and set it along with the croissant on the floor next to the spot where Fi would resume her work on the flooring. She smiled, thinking about Fi’s joy at finding the small gift.

“I’ll bet Chelsey doesn’t know your favorite breakfast food, the ones that cause your beautiful green eyes to light up,” Saville mumbled under her breath.

Saville hadn’t heard the squeak of the saloon doors or footsteps on the curved staircase. She turned around when she felt a presence behind her, but it wasn’t Fi. Instead, a translucent Ruth stood in the doorway, beckoning her to follow. Saville stood and brushed her hands against her pants before tagging behind the less threatening ghost. Neither Saville nor Fi had touched the farthest bedroom in the back after assessing the size and determining it would make a perfect guest bedroom. Fi had wanted to tackle the larger areas first, leaving the small bedroom for the end.

As Saville looked at the room that just the other day was in fine shape, she swore, “Fucking hell, George. What new bug crawled up your ass?” To Saville’s surprise, Ruth chuckled, then pointed to the large hole in the floor.

“George and I do not agree, but I do not wish to hide from our story. History cannot be rewritten, but the facts should be told without judgment. Perhaps you will learn something important. Jealousy is a destructive force that you should never allow to grow and fester. The final piece is there.” Ruth pointed to the hole and then disappeared.
